Washington State Dance/Drill Coaches Association

Middle School and Junior High Teams

WSDDCA wants to support middle school and junior high dance/drill programs.  The following guidelines are designed to help both middle level and high school coaches.

Competition Guidelines

Participation in Competitions:  MS/JH teams may participate in competitions, but they should only compete against other MS/JH teams, not HS teams.  Separate awards should be given to MS/JH teams.  MS/JH teams will not be allowed to participate in regular season competitions during the last 2 weeks of competition, UNLESS there is space available and no other HS team is seeking to attend those competitions in an attempt to qualify for districts.  This is to insure that MS/JH teams are not "taking" a HS team's place in their attempt to qualify for districts.

Drill Down:  MS/JH and HS teams must be separated during drill downs.  Drill down will be called at the same time, but MS/JH teams will need to gather in their own section separate from the HS teams.  Separate awards should be given to MS/JH participants.

Judging Considerations for MS/JH Teams

JMS/JH teams consider feedback more important than their score.  Judges will judge MS/JH teams in the three captions as follows:

Overall Effect:  MS/JH teams will be held to a slightly lower standard than HS teams due to differing maturity and levels of development.  Credit in terms of points will be awarded to /MSJH teams who demonstrate higher than average development in Overall Effect.

Exectuion:  MS/JH teams will be held to the same standard as HS teams.

Content:  Same as Overall Effect.  Credit will be given to MS/JH teams who demonstrate more difficult skills, vocabulary, and complexity.
